Hola Familia!!!!
This week has been alright. On Thursday we drove out
to a small town that's pretty far away from Canutillo. I think it is the
farthest city we have in our zone. I think it takes 15 to 20 minutes to
get there. But it was an awesome drive, with a lot of farms and
chilies There were also so wineries on the way out there, and those were
cool. They were small but sweet. Some of the homes on the drive out
there where so big. The city we drove to was La Union. We drove out
there to see some investigators but they weren't home so we had to drive all
the way back home. It’s not a terrible drive but it’s a drive. That
was definitely sweet. We found a new investigator while tracting last
week. She told us to come back this week and so we did. We taught
her the first lesson and somehow she knew English. We were teaching her
in English and Spanish. The lesson was awesome, and I felt like the Spirit
was there. She sounded like the perfect member for the branch. She
wanted a small congregation so she would feel welcomed. My companion and I were excited after in the
car, and we were like, “Please come to our ward.” But you know when you
teach a good lesson Satan might somehow get into the mix. We tried to teach her again, and she texts
you and tells you, "7:30's kind of late tonight and I am super busy,"
and you taught her at the same time two nights ago, you’re just like, “You got
to be kidding me.” We asked her if we could come back on Saturday.
She never texted back. You teach people and see how great the gospel
would bless their lives, and when they turn around and say “nope,” you just got
to say to yourself have fun not having eternal happiness. We were tracting
one day, and we knocked on a semi nice trailer that had a screen metal door
where it was super hard to see inside. This lady answered the door and my
companion was like, "Hola!" And you get in a habit cuz most
people are Latino or Mexican down here, and she immediately shot bad in a rude
matter, "I don't speak Spanish." We were like, "Ok, sorry,
it’s kind of hard to see through this door." We told her that we
were in the area and we were spreading a message about Jesus Christ and the
happiness that our gospel brings us. She in the rudest tone told us,
"I am Christian, and I know all about Jesus!" We were
like, “Okay, have a nice day.” So that was interesting. But other
than that stuff it’s been an alright week.
Also this week we taught a less-active person who is in a
wheelchair. His name is Jesus, but for some reason this guy with the
Jesus name goes by Chewy. He is cool and we just visit him and try to
spread the spirit with him. If you could image Chewbauka in a wheelchair,
that would be Chewy. His hair is frizzled, his teeth have gone, and he makes
noises. He has a great spirit about him, and he loves having us in his
home. He lives in his sister’s house, and she is a member. Their
house is kind of falling apart on the outside, but you go inside and it reminds
me of a Pirates of the Caribbean house. It’s all wooden and it’s
cool. It is always an adventure going there and chilling with
Chewy.
This week has been really hot. It has gotten up to 105
and stuff this week. You just got to love it, and I do. I am
getting my tan on with a white shirt and tie. I love it in the
desert. Also we are trying to get this one guy active in the church again.
His name is Paul. He is probably
one of my favorite persons I have met out here. He has the sweetest beard
you will ever see. It is white. It
is so tight. He has tattoos running up and down his arms, and he just has
a heart full of love. I love him to death. Hopefully he will start
coming to church. Our ward is a branch. It’s the smallest church
building I have ever seen. We don't even meet in a chapel, but they call
it an assembly hall. Every Sunday they have to set up chairs for us to
sit down on. We don't have benches, but we have the comfy chairs.
Our Branch has probably only 50ish people in it. It’s sweet, and you got
to love the country folks.
I ate a crazy chili yesterday. These chilis were just
sitting in a bowl covered in BBQ sauce. I was like, why not try
them. I grabbed one and slapped it on my plate. I took a bite out
of it and, oh my goodness, it was a flamer. At first you only taste the
BBQ taste, and then it goes away, and, holy cow, you’re grabbing on for dear
life. It doesn't go away either, and the hotness just stayed in my
throat. It was hot. Also for dinner this week a lady served us
up refried beans and that was it. There was some queso in the beans and
she gave us chips, hard and soft tortillas. You had to get creative by
making yourself a bean burrito or using it as dip. She brought out this chili
mixture, and it looked like straight-up poison. None of the other Elders
were going to take a whack at it, so I was like why not. I slapped some
beans on this big tortilla and then put on the poison. It was way hot,
but it was really good. I liked it. But that’s pretty much it from
here.
Sorry I didn't tell you how stoked I was to get a 4 on the
AP test. I didn't think I could pull that thing off. I know the Lord
definitely help me out on that one. I don't think I need anything.
Zout is something I need. If you could send that it would be great. Could
you also find out Jake VanB, Donald’s, and Dane’s email for me? Did
Cooper leave for the MTC yet? Hopefully I told you everything that was
happening this week and hopefully I answered everything. Dad, you'll have
to come down here for an Aggie game. You'll eat some mean chilis. I
got a letter from Grandpa Smith. Can you tell him thanks, and I'll write
them as soon as I can. Thanks. Oh I forgot to tell you today
President Miller was on his traveling thing and was visiting every
companionship apartment and he stopped by ours. But keep living it up in
Holladay. Tell everyone how much I miss them and love them. Give my
friends a what’s up and tell them I miss them and love them. Keep it real
at home for me. I miss the Sunday dinners.
Love you guys, and I'll talk to you next week!! Keep it steezy for me!
Con mucho amor,
-Elder Smith
