Hey Family!
It was great to hear from you this week. I am doing well just chilling here in El Paso
and loving life. It’s weird to be down south away from
ABQ. I am so used to talking about ABQ and not El Paso. We
will go to appointments, and I will ask people how long they have lived in ABQ
and realize shortly after that I am not there anymore and that I am in El
Paso. I am trying to get adjusted to the Spanish down here as
well. It’s a bit different than the north Spanish, but it’s still the
same. It’s great to be right here next to the border in the bright, hot
New Mexican sun. I love it here and the work. This place will always be my home.
This week seems like a blur to me, to be honest. We have
been going to all these houses, and I have no clue who they are. I am
slowly but surely learning this area, and that is good. I really love the
desert, and it has beauty in it.
We have this couple we are teaching right now named Noel and
Patricia. They are a super cool couple and really have the desire
to progress and become better. They are older, but they are still kicking
it. We had 2 lessons with them this week, and that went well. They
have the desire to change and become better. During one of the lessons we
had with Noel this week she was asleep and unavailable. But he accepted a date for baptism. He
has a date for February 28th so we are excited for him.
Hopefully we can get Patricia on board as well for that date. They are
progressing, and that is awesome to see. We are trying to get them in the
water, and I know they can make it. They are awesome.
We are teaching another family, the Familia Gomez, and they are
pretty solid. Right now we are only teaching the mom and the
daughter. The husband was interested at first but has kind of disappeared
from what Elder Folsom told me. They are super cool, and they really want
to progress. I guess they had a date but it dropped due to lack of Sunday
attendance. Hopefully we will get them on track again and I know they
will progress. We have high hopes for them. We are excited.
I got bit by a dog this week. It wasn’t a huge dog,
just a crazy Chihuahua that thought he could attack me. It started biting
my leg, and it wouldn’t come off, but it soon ran away after it thought it
won. I forgot how crazy the dogs are down here in El Paso. They
drive me nuts sometimes, and we are trying to be careful around town.
We are working hard out here and trying to get the work
going. We need to find some new investigators this week, so we are
planning on going to knock out there in the desert. Sunland reminds me of
Chappy, trailer parks and nothing but dirt. We also cover one of the
nicest housing areas in El Paso. You should see some of these houses;
they knock me off my socks. It is pretty rad to see. I love being
with Elder Folsom and being his companion. He is a great
Elder, and I am learning a lot from him.
We learned that Elder Holland is coming to our mission in February,
so that is going to be cool. We are excited for that, and it is going to
be cool to have an apostle here in the mission. Missions are such a
blessing, and it’s sad to see them go. One day you’re in the MTC, and the
next minute you’re sitting here with just a couple transfers to go. I
love it here in New Mexico, and I am sad to see the time go by. I know it
won’t stop, so we just have to make it fun. I love New Mexico and the
people here.
Sorry this email is short this week. I don’t have much to
write because I am still trying to get this area down and figure out who
everyone is. I know the ward members are dope, so that is awesome.
The chapel is also super cool, and it reminds me a lot of ours in Utah.
It is old, but it has a great style to it. I am doing good so don’t worry
about me. I hope everyone is in one piece and you have a good week.
I will be keeping Mcunit in my prayers this week. That’s crazy to me that
Tyler Mcfly is playing rugby. I never had the guts to do that. Be
careful dude, and don’t get a bad concussion or destroy your face. I
remember seeing my friends after games, and they looked like they got destroyed,
but they were having fun. I know you will love it, and it is right up
your alley. I don’t think I need anything else really in the
package. I am excited to get my new camera, and I am sorry that my other
one pooped out. I feel really bad. Thanks for everything you do for
me, and I miss you guys tons! Have a great week, and you’re in my
prayers!
Love,
-Elder Smith
